Octolamp — Privacy Policy

Octolamp has no account system, no sign-in of its own, no analytics and no server. Your Octopus Energy credentials stay in your iPhone's Keychain and are sent to Octopus alone. Nothing about you, your home or your energy use reaches us, because there is nowhere for it to go.

What we collect

Nothing. We operate no server that receives your data, hold no account for you, and have no way to read anything the app stores. Your readings, your settings and your credentials live on your own devices.

What the app stores on your device

• Your Octopus API key and account number, in the iOS Keychain. They are shared with your paired Apple Watch so it can fetch readings too, over Apple's encrypted device-to-device link.
• Your readings — up to about sixty days of half-hourly figures, your tariff's rates, and your most recent live reading — in a private container shared between the app, its widgets and the watch app, so screens open instantly and work offline.
• Your settings, including whether you have a Home Mini, how you pay, your chosen theme, and the outward half of a postcode if you use the tariff comparison.

Signing out removes the credentials and the stored readings. Deleting the app removes everything else.

What leaves your device, and where it goes

Every request the app makes goes to Octopus Energy, at api.octopus.energy, or to our own content file described below. There is no third destination.

• Your own readings and account — the app signs in to Octopus with the API key you provide and asks for your meter readings, your tariff and, on a prepayment meter, your balance. This is your data being fetched from your supplier, at your instruction. Octopus's handling of those requests is governed by their privacy policy.
• The outward half of a postcode — if you use the tariff comparison, the app sends the part before the space, such as EH1, to the industry grid supply point lookup at api.octopus.energy, to work out which regional prices apply. An outward code covers thousands of households and identifies neither you nor your address; the inward half is discarded before anything is sent, even if you typed a full postcode. This is optional: skip the tariff table and the request is never made.
• The resources list — the app asks our server at whatifhomeenergy.co.uk for the list of links shown under Resources. It is a one-way request for a file, and sends nothing about you. If it cannot be reached, the app uses the list built into it.

As with any web request, a server sees your device's IP address and the file requested. We do not log ours to identify you, combine them with anything else, or build any profile.

No tracking or analytics

No analytics, no advertising, no tracking pixels, no cookies, no device fingerprinting, and nothing requiring App Tracking Transparency. We build no profile of you, and share nothing with anyone, because we hold nothing.

Purchases

Octolamp is free for seven days, after which live use stays free and a one-off purchase unlocks the rest. Purchases are handled entirely by Apple: we never see your payment details, and we learn nothing about you from a purchase. Whether this device is unlocked is recorded on the device itself.

The Resources section links to independent third-party sites, such as Citizens Advice and Ofgem. Some may be affiliate or referral links, marked with an asterisk, meaning we could earn a small commission or referral credit if you use them. That never changes which links are listed, and following one opens that site under its privacy policy, not ours.

Children

Octolamp is a general-audience utility and is not directed at children. Because we collect no data, we collect none from anyone, whatever their age.

Your control

Everything lives on your device. Sign out in Settings to remove your credentials and stored readings, or delete the app to remove all of it. You can also reset your API key in your Octopus account at any time, which stops Octolamp reading anything immediately. There is nothing held elsewhere to request or delete.

Changes to this policy

If this policy changes, the new version will be posted here with a new date. We will not retroactively reduce your privacy; there is nothing to reduce, as we collect nothing.
